Fluent Code Simulation of Flow around a Naval Hull: the DTMB 5415
نویسندگان
چکیده
This report describes the application of the Fluent code to the numerical simulation of the freesurface flow around a model naval ship; the DTMB 5415. Simulations were performed using both a structured hexahedral mesh and an unstructured tetrahedral mesh of lower resolution. The results show that Fluent is able to accurately simulate the total ship resistance, near-field wave shapes, and the velocity field in the propeller plane. The results indicate that Fluent is a viable tool which could be considered for use in more demanding naval problems, such as the computation of ship wakes undergoing specified manoeuvres. A number of significant problems were encountered during the course of the work and have been summarized to facilitate future applications of the code to similar naval problems.

متن کاملTwo Phase Level-Set/Immersed-Boundary Cartesian Grid Method for Ship Hydrodynamics
Recent progress at IIHR on the development of CFDShip-Iowa version 6 is presented. Current focus is on a sharp interface Cartesian grid method for the large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent two-phase incompressible flows. In this method, the level set formulation for two-phase incompressible flows is adopted. The density and pressure jump conditions across the interface (the latter due to sur...
متن کاملThe Numerical Simulation of Ship Waves Using Cartesian Grid Methods
Two different cartesian-grid methods are used to simulate the flow around the DDG 5415. The first technique uses a “coupled level-set and volume-of-fluid” (CLS) technique to model the free-surface interface. The noflux boundary condition on the hull is imposed using a finite-volume technique. The second technique uses a level-set technique (LS) to model the free-surface interface. A body-force ...
متن کاملShip Hull Form Optimization using Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm
In this paper, artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms are introduced to optimize ship hull forms for reduced drag. Two versions of ABC algorithm are used: one is the basic ABC algorithm, and the other is an improved artificial bee colony (IABC) algorithm. A recently developed fast flow solver based on the Neumann-Michell theory is used to evaluate the drag of the ship in the optimization proces...
